Situated in Simla- the queen of hill stations, the Viceregal Lodge is a brilliant piece of Elizabethan style of architecture. Popularly known as the British Viceroy's residence, the historic building is witness to a lot of historic events. The Elizabethan style structure was built in the year 1880. The interiors are made of wood imported from Burma. The wooden structure has stood the test of time. Even after so many years past it's construction, Viceregal Lodge is immune to decay caused by water and insects. Security arrangements and top notch gadgetry was installed in the Lodge - a fire alarm in case of fire was put in place way back in the late 17th Century. The expenses on the construction of this regal lodge were around 36 Lakh Rupees.
The historic significance of the building is unique. For instance, the table inside the conference room of the lodge bears testimony to the meeting held between Nehru, Jinnah and Mountbatten and their subsequent agreement to the partition of India.
In the post-independence period, the Lodge's glamour started to fade. The President of independent India refused to make it his residence as it refreshed memories of the British rule.
Many years past, still the charm of this regal lodge remains. Currently the lodge houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. There's a Library that's among the most extensive and well-maintained ones in India. Several Indian as well as foreign scholars from all over the country and elsewhere come here to study.
The Viceroy Lodge is amongst the few ancient structures of Simla and a popular tourist attraction. Plans to convert this beautiful structure into a hotel, resort or convention center are underway.
